The M49A1 surface trip-flare is a booby trap flare that illuminates an infiltrating force at night. It is composed of an aluminium case and a cover assembly containing the initiating mechanism. The latter consists of a hinged striker, a lever, a safety clip and a pull ring. It is fitted with a U-shaped mounting bracket and is installed by nailing or clamping it to any stake, post or other upright object.Depending on the installation, the flare may be fired by releasing the trigger or by removing a pull pin in the same manner as a grenade pin. When a tripwire (a 15m length of wire is provided with each unit) is attached to the trigger, the flare can be fired by a minimum pressure of 900g. Cutting or breaking the tripwire will also fire the flare. The flare is activated instantaneously and produces a 35,000 cd brilliant light for approximately 1minute.A copy of this trip-flare is produced in Iran. The M49A1 is also produced in South Korea by the Hanwha Corporation.

Note: This is like a very bright road flare, and not a shoot in the air flare.
