This is a review of the Gerber pocket knife sharpener, but it really applies to this class of sharpeners because there are a number on the market that is the same design. The Gerber one below is a good one because you can generally trust the quality.
Now I have been using these for years to maintain the blades on my knives, and I like to keep them very sharp all the time and this makes that possible.
Now these are best used for maintaining an edge, and not creating one. If you don’t have an edge you should use a stone to get your knife blade in order before using these. But if you buy a knife, these will help keep them sharp.
I keep one of these in my B.O.B. as part of my basic survival kit. If you cannot keep your knife sharp, then sooner or later that knife will lose a lot of its value in the field. It does not take up much room, and its very light weight.
Now because these are so small and light they can be hard to hold (especially for me), but after a few try’s you figure out how to hold them, and not getting cramps in your hand. One thing to keep in mind is they don’t require much pressure to use, just use them gently and you will stay safe, and you will always have nice sharp blades.
Here is an at home tip: While at home the best way to use one of these is to place the sharpener in a small vise, and tighten it down nice and snug. This keeps both hands away from the blade, and you can sharpen blades even faster, and safer.
Price: Depends, but normally just a few dollars
RATING: A must have item for survival kits, tackle boxes, or pack.
