Family tradition in my family is the father buys each son his first .22
Mine arrived at Christmas. A walnut stocked 10/22 that I still have. I will never sell it,, it will be passed to my sons at the appropriate time along with my fathers, an uncles, and my paternal grandfathers .22's.

First rifle I got myself was a Mini-14, first pistol was a .45 parts gun that rattled when I shook it but I could hit the black at 50 yrds offhand all day long.

Marlin Model 600 (Golden edition Model 60) .22 and a 500-rnd pack of CCI Mini-Mags for Christmas after I turned 13. I still have it and the original stock (although I added black Dragunov furniture to it). I never seem to shoot it anymore, but my daughter will get it when she's old enough.

I was 8 or 9 when I got my 10/22. And I remember being able to buy ammo for it at the True Value and Western Auto in town a year later.

My dad bought me a marlin 30-30 the day I was born. On the DAY. Got a BB gun when I was in kindergarten, and a .410 shotgun when I was 7. We lived in the country so I was taught the ways and sent on my way. I have an awesome picture I drew when I was 6 years old in school with crayon. In the picture I drew a sun, and a tree with a dead bird on the ground. My teacher asked my mom about it on parents night.

My kids could answer "teething ring". I bought both of them a 10/22 shortly after they were born. Wanted them to be in place so the wife (now ex-wife) could just hand them to the boys in case anything happened to me...

my dad gave me a 12 ga single shot from sears. i think it was a goose gun cuz it was friggin long and we were from mi. the second was a win. model 1894 30wcf made prior to 1913. unfortunately i got these prior to a drug fueled misspent youth kicked into high gear. lost both of them to pawn shops. still cry myself to sleep sometimes about them. 8-900 to replace the win. not that it would be the same.

My first real gun was a percussion derringer from Dixie Gun Works. I wish that I still had it. That was about 1963.

My first rifle was an "unserviceable" Italian M1891. It was caked with grease, dirt and grime but complete. I took it home and started cleaning it up. Took a while but eventually a 1918 rifle emerged. I couldn't see anything that led me to believe that it was unsafe, so bought a couple of clips of ammo and took it down by the river and tied it to a tree with a long cord around the trigger. Capped off the clip full of ammo and it worked fine each time, so reassembled it and shot many hundreds of rounds through it. Still have it...
