Can the select-fire components be taken out of an M14 and it still function in semi-auto?
My agency just received one as a transfer from another department, and the selector switch spins completely around. I'm sure someone re-assembled the rifle improperly and broke something. A function check reveals that, depending on which position the selector switch spins to, it will fire semi or full auto. If I can just remove the parts and put the rifle into service I will...LEO's really have no need for full-auto with low controlability anyway!

Yes and NO....
They can be removed and the rifle will shoot in semi, but the center dismount notch being in the center may cause the op rod to jump out of it's track.
The best way to do this is to remove the pin in the switch and replace the switch for a selector lock (button) which prevents the rifle from firing in full auto. The connector arm has a lug in it's center that aids in this.
