Hi all
my name is Bob
im just about to start building a Cobray 11/9
before i have built a ak47 so im not that novice into these..
i would like to know specially how to align the mag well into the lower receiver and how to weld "with a mig" the best/nicest way..
for the magwell should i first weld the rest of the lower receiver, build up the rest of the gun and then with a use of a mag with some blind ammo align it proper before spotwelding?
the lowers receiver consists of 3 parts right/left side and bottom plate that goes up in the rear..
when welding those parts togheter.. should i weld from the outside?
i want a so clean look as possible ..

thanks for your help and answers
Bob

for mig welding, I recommend welding with a gas MIG.  splat-o-matic (without gas) works, but it's noy near as clean, and you have far less cleanup to do.

weld the receivers on the outside, then just clean up the welds (the bolt rides on the inside, and it's REALLY hard to clean up)

one minor tip thats not really needed, but it sure is nice to do is to sand the side and bottom plates to a really smooth finish on the insides.  this will mean less drag between parts when assembled for smoother function

I would go by the blueprints as much as possible (if possible) for placement issues  build your receiver first and then work on the grip/magwell.  this insures you have all internal fitting complete and everything is smooth before worrying about the grip (one problem at a time)

I see you have built the ak47, The cleaner way to build the lower receiver is instead of using the three piece weld together lower receiver go and buy a set of blueprints, (I bought mine for $4.99) the blueprints are the real size as the receiver, just get a piece of 14ga steel and (cut and paste) trace the blueprint to the steel then bend it like you would with the ak47, plus the magwell will be in the right place because you traced it all out with the blueprints, Make sure you buy the trigger guard for that model

of mac because they are precut and perbent to lenght, then use the triger guard to help with the weld in of the magazine well.

If that photo had an inch scale on it, you could use that image as a blue print.  lol  assuming they don't die of frustration trying to get the scale correct because the image is to large to upload full size on the forum...

Spending $5.00 is pretty cheap, and hopefully you will have all the dimensions needed (as if it took that many).

The Cobray M11/9 is a fun pistol (much more fun if it's a legal post sample, and a handful if you never fired a machine gun before).

The biggest issue with the design is the charging handle on top (which is why you see so many side charger variations these days. that way they can place a rail on top, and you can actually mount REAL SIGHTS or a red dot).

The M11/9 is fun but not accurate.   If you were to slightly modify the design (retaining the top charging handle), by removing the front sight (and I'm using the term loosely) and adding risers front and rear for compact adjustable handgun sights it would be a major improvement.  My personal choice would be Tritium night sights mounted on riser's with a dovetail, so you could initially adjust the sight's.   This way you would have a high capacity day and night basic handgun.   with the original sight (like things) it's a point and shoot pistol. and in time you can get good at point shooting, but it's just not practical without some real sights.

If you were to place real sights on the M11/9 it would become a fairly accurate high capacity handgun that's actually usable.

Without the sights, it's a high capacity home defense pistol where the range is close enough to not require sights, and if anyone were to see the M11/9 they would be moving at a very high rate of speed in the other direction.

Without sights, It's also a good truck gun, and NOBODY would try to take your truck with that pointed at them.

The whole point of my post is for anyone considering an M11/9 build to know these limitations before you start the build, so you can make modification in the design process, otherwise you will need to modify the pistol, by actually adding REAL sights.

Also, the Blueprint is a great item to have because there are a lot of guns being made (including rifles and belt feds) that using the M11/9 lower.  there have been a lot of full auto's made in the past, and a couple very cool 22LR that used the large American 180 drums.

The M11/9 can be far more than just an M11/9, it can be a weapon system, able to be made into a semi auto rifle with side or top mounted magazine, shotgun, and, likely the most used...  the Personal Defense Weapon. using PPSH 7.62x25 drums, suomi drums  (mounted ahead of the M11/9 lower).

The Sky is the limit.....

IT"s funning you brough up the scaling of that photo. befor I loaded that photo I had a photo be for that were I spent like two hours writing down every single measuremet and the blueprint was so full of measuremets you could not read it so I just took a picture of it blank. It make me so mad people try to sell blueprints that I went and bought every blueprint/ templates I could find on firearms 1919 all the macs receivers upper/ lowers hk stuff like blueprints for cockin tubes, ak receivers like 30 different blueprint templates. So I just give them out for free.
