Hello everyone, I am getting into building the PE 57, and it seems that the old cut receiver is welded or something attached to the front and rear trunion. Has anyone have experience with how to remove the old receiver to prepare for the new one?
Thank you for helping out a nub!
Here is the picture. It is spot welded and I am just not sure how to remove those since they are so close to the vital spots.

They make bits to drill out the spot welds. I have used regular drill bits to do that. Just use a big bit and drill into the spot welds a little then pry the pieces off with a screw driver or small pry bar. If needed, (most likely) touch up the spots after with a grinder and sanding wheel! Just enough to remove the material that you do not want to be there.
If possible, drill it clamped on a drill press. Next best thing would be held in a vise and drilled free hand.
The big bit will help to remove the spot weld only and it will drill more slowly due to the size thus reducing the likeliness of drilling into the part.
But, even if you do drill into the part a little, it most likely will be fine and get covered by the new metal.

Drilling the spot welds won't release the sheet metal as it is copper brazed also just mill out the sheet metal by plunging a .125 dia endmill and do the flat areas with a .250 endmill to clear the rest of the metal. Only go to the depth of the original sheet metal about .425 and the repair section will fit it perfectly. You can then drill the 7 spot welds with the .250 endmill to use for plug welds to hold the repair section in place.
Regards,
Artty
