It appears the plans have been shelved due to cost
The US will continue to use facilities at HMAS Stirling on Garden Island off the coast This was a base for US Subs during WW2
As usual the Chinese object since they are undergoing one of the largest military build ups in history. They're a little hard to take seriously. Fortunately as one Chinese put it the Red Army are the people to call if you need a parade, they're not much good for anything else. That may change in 20 years.
Our former Prime Minister (a Mandarin speaker) impolitely labeled them a pack of Rat Fxxxxrs Chinese insults are different to ours. (Turtle Egg means you don't know who your father is).
For those not in the know the US Navy has financed our Diesel Sub Fleet (Including Upgrades) for years on the basis that they can enter waters Nuke Subs can't & they are available on demand. The Fleet is due to be replaced in a few years at the AUS taxpayers expense. Although there has been some unwarranted criticism of the current Class. In War games they have been able to score kills on US Carriers & the Supposedly invincible Nuclear Class.
