I have a question about retractable stocks? First off can i have one on my rifle? not a folding stock. One like an HK mp5 that retracts right into the reciver. I just need clarfication on this because, I am building a rifle for my seinor project and need it 100% legal. And i dont want it to fall into some weird catagory of being illegal
If it matters it will be semi-auto, mag fed, with a 17 Inch barrel.

YES!!!! One minor detail, the over all lenght, with the stock collapsed, MUST be 26 inches or longer!!! If it is shorter then that collapsed, then NO!!!!
Or, make it permanently only collapse to 27" to be safe. Does that make sense?

Just got an email about this subject. Here it is in its entirety as i received it;
Hey Brother. I read the measuremenmt post and had to do some research. Got this online:
"To measure overall length do so along, "the distance between the extreme ends of the weapon measured along a line parallel to the center line of the bore." 27 CFR sec. 179.11. On a folding stock weapon you measure with the stock extended, provided the stock is not readily detachable, and the weapon is meant to be fired from the shoulder."
I haven't downloaded to see it myself, but here's the government publishing offices link to that:
Also depends on the state. I'm reading Michican is like 29" or right at a civil war musket . Kidding on the musket, but some states are strict. I plan on researching once I download it to ensure I'm in compliance.
Take care

I found the ATF letter and it states the measurement to be taken with the stock extended/folded out for rifle firing. It's not my letter, so i'm not sure on the legalities of posting it as lurkers are many.
