Questions about machinery can never be dumb, for example, safety questions.

My Harrison Lathe, can grab a loose or dangly bit and pull you into the machine. The lathe I intend to replace the Harrison with at some point is a Dean Smith & Grace 13x42", that thing will tear you apart if you get dragged in.

So, regards questions with machinery, no question is dumb, ask & I will answer.

I knew there was a reason i liked you.
Part of reason you never see sleeves on my t-shirts.
Don't like sleeves they get caught.

No sleeves, but you live in a hot place, I don't.

Last winter it hit -25ºC here, so it gets a bit chilly.

Sleeves are essential, but when it's that cold I tie the sleeves up, so they don't dangle.

Ah yes, tighter fitting insulation is always a good bet. I have several shirts of the "long john" variety that I like to keep in my winter clothing tote, gets pulled from the shed and placed in the closet between late September and late October every year.

Hopefully when I get the shop stove sorted out, I won't need to wear it. Even better when I get the heat treatment stoves up & running.

The shop will be lovely and toasty

Club rifles are fun. I just finished restoring an old .22 Greener takedown Martini. Had to hunt all over England before I found an original tang sight for it.

I have to agree with you there NRADon, there's load of little gems throughout history, you've just got to look for them.

I wouldn't mind see some pics of that old Martini, if you don't mind

I'd love to post some once I figure out how to upload pictures to this site, Northumbrian. After the tang sight, the biggest expense was buying a 26" Redman liner for the barrel. The original rifling was pitted all to hell. I actually got an email from Graham Greener within two days after I emailed him to check on which parts were colorcased on those old guns. He said only the buttplate so I re-colorcased it at gunsmithing school and rust blued the rest of the gun instead of doing the old oil blacking.

The original receiver for this build is supposed to be browned, but I'm going to rust blue it.
I just prefer a good deep bluing over browning, it's something about spending over a week to do it, and at the end of the process the result is stunning.

As per pics, make sure they are about 1000 pixels along the long edge, and then hit the button above the text editor, second from the right (a tree with the arrow). a pop up window will appear, select the image and hit ok or enter.
Then, click OK, you should get a pop up saying upload or something like that, when its done that initial window will close and you'll be back to the forum.

I've made my decision - I'm going to follow along with this build.
I was looking at the prints and it's not terrible.
As someone suggested: going to .17. I was looking at the .17 Aguila which appears to be the same length as a .22LR.
I don't have any .17 rifles... which means I need one!

As you've already stated the bolt head needs to be redrawn. I don't have any ID threaders but I have a floating tap holder... but I also don't have a 5/8-18 tap. Buy this or that... with the threader I can thread anything. With the tap I can only tap that one size...

I'm getting carried away.

I'm going to mirror your design in .22LR. If I can succeed I'll think about .17 Aguila.
I'm not going to steal your thunder but I'm more curious to see how differently the problems and designs will be approached.

Here's some questions: (and my answers)
Q: How do you time the extractor in the bolt to the body?
A: Thread both, screw 'em together, final machining.

Q: What's a 33 TPI bolt with a .25 head?
A: I'm looking to standardize the hardware and use a #8-32 bolt. The head is .265 and I can either skin it or make the hole bigger. To maintain the depth of the hex I can skin the underside of the bolt.

Q: .835 diameter... whaa?
A: I'm probably going to see if I can't pull off a 7/8 (.875) diameter so when it comes time to bed it to a stock I can just use a ball mill.
Probably going to do a stock of my own design anyway.

Thinking a 3 piece assembly, if not 4, for the bolt.

Ahh, Mr Backbencher, I see your getting over the jet lag.
It always fills me with joy to see a friend return to safe lands.

As per the odd English dimensions, you want to rebuild a Land rover

I ordered and received my material. Time to make some chips.
I'll be working from the inside out starting with the striker, followed by the body, then cocking handle.

Cool, Sounds like a plan.

I've been busy pulling the engine from my Land rover as the engine crankshaft is making some very dodgy noises.
In other words it sounds like a skeleton playing with itself in a gashcan.

LR... Been there, done that.

I don't have a 12-28 die. I do have a 12-28 tap.
Who picked this odd ball size?
Grabbed some scrap and made a go gage.
Then I single point threaded the striker. I also turned the diameter to .249 for a length of .265.
When it comes time for the cocking handle I will simply tap and counter bore it with a 1/4 end mill .250 deep.
