Isn't that the Buick engine?

Nope, I've got the TD5 diesel, it's the inline 5 cylinder, with the OHC. I've been fighting with the exhaust manifold & turbocharger for about 2 days, everything was just solid, so moved on to the the other bit's I have to get out, but all of that is now out, got to get the starter motor off today, then I can begin undoing the gearbox. As soon as thats done I can get back to doing some more important like building a rifle

I'm really annoyed at having to fix the engine, but at the same time I'm as happy as a pig in 5h1t doing it

Paraquat, What's up with your V8?

As per the rifle build, it's nice to see someone making progress with it

I'm hoping to get some time tomorrow to get on with it.

4.0 from a Discovery. Leaked out of ever seal and leaked in some places it shouldn't have.
I'm so close minded I automatically assume everyone is from the states. I forget you guys have cool diesels.
I just overhauled a 4.0 inline 6 in my Jeep Grand Cherokee. Over the pond there is a turbo diesel Grand Cherokee.

I have the 2.5 TD5 Discovery 2, it's mainly for working around the place, I've fitted a 12500lb winch on the front, which does a nice job with the trees, pulling them out after they've been cut, and my wife uses it to feed the horses. So it's work vehicle mainly.
Engine building is my hobby, guns are work.
I've got to get my shop finished so I can get my Flow bench sorted out, then I can gas flow & port heads.

I have pulled the Land Rover into the log after it got wedged, on a rock I didn't see, and the adjacent tree. I was looking to see what the log was caught on when the Disco, bumped into my arse, I was not expecting that.
It only slid for about a foot, but it still slid.
Once I found the rock, I moved the log over it and carried on pulling it out.
This is what the Land Rover looked like whilst it was working

That "bad boy" is work vehicle, so it's pretty much standard apart from the winch bumper & 12500lb winch, springs all round, I've replaced the air springs.

The Bad Boy, is yet to be built, it's going to be a Range Rover P38 with a 4.6l V8 gas engine, that I am going to work some magic and turn into a diesel.

Stock block & crank, but I'm going to cast my own heads and pistons. reduce the bore so it has the same stroke/bore ratio as my TD5 engine in the Disco.
but a capacity of 4.0l, so it'll be a very torquey long stroke diesel.
Each head will have it's own mechanical injection pump, and every two cylinders will have a turbo charger. by the time I'm finished it'll growl a very nice 350BHP, and produce about 500Nm (369ft lbf).
This baby will be a play thing, pure and simple.

I love engine building, but I will never do it as a job, as I'd end up hating it.

How are you going to reduce the bore? Custom sleeves?

Casting my own head, I'll be working with clay first to get all the ports right, with the highest flow numbers I can get, not forgetting that flow volume without velocity is useless of course, and the engine won't run.
Also with clay it allows me the work out the water jacket & cooling pathways.

The bore will be with a custom sleeve, centrifugally cast, made from Spheroidal Graphite Iron.

Oh, and the engine will be designed from the start to run on biodiesel, so the fuel pathways in the engine will run below the glow plugs. Not to mention insulated fuel tank, fuel lines, and high capacity lift pump.

Ok so you lost me on all that as i know sh***t about diesel.
However i can sympathize about doing what you love as a job.
That's why i enjoy working on guns so much but could never be a paid gunsmith.  I do jobs occasionally that i get paid for but its still fun and not work...

The fun runner sounds to an interesting machine. You gonna custom build the body or use something already avlb.??

Biodiesel congeals and turns into jelly, especially when cold. Most people get around this by installing cartridge heaters to warm it up and liquify it.Some people run the line parallel or touching the exhaust header so the heat from the collector does the work. You end up not (entirely) wasting heat energy and eliminate the need for a heater.

In college I helped with the build of a biodiesel (fryer oil) vw rabbit, they made an auxiliary fuel cell (only about 4 gallon) to hold regular pump diesel fuel, then ran a tee from the radiator coolant hoses to route a copper pipe coil to go inside the primary (factory vw) fuel tank. This made it so that you could switch a valve to run regular diesel fuel upon the last minute of driving, (to clear the lines and injectors) and while warming up the engine. The extra coolant line then would keep the large tank of fryer oil at a constant (approx 220 degree F) temperature while driving.

The heads will be designed to run the fuel lines past both exhaust manifolds, & the glowplugs.
Together with an insulated fuel tank & fuel lines, and a tank heater, the fuel should flow very nicely indeed.

The body will be a custom design, as the turbos will need an intercooler each, so four intercoolers just will not fit anything that already exists. But think of an Aston Martin on steroids, and you'll get an idea of what I'm thinking.
The body will be Carbon Fibre, the idea is I can put the weight where I want it. If the body shell is next to nothing weight wise, I can put more weight into the chassis, transmission, and axles.
