Hello guys, so this is my first venture in to gun making and my first post on this forum! So im currently in the process of building a 22lr pistol similar to this   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoqox9jzz5k i was gonna build the childs camper pistol but decided on this instead. I don't have a mill or lathe yet but i have a drill press, dremel, belt grinder, sandblaster, vise, welder, files, portaband in a vertical stand and some other stuff. My materials for this project so far is a piece of 01 5/8"od rod 12" long, 1/16,1/8 and .045 music wire, A 1"x 0.188"x0.624" piece of 4130 tubing 12" long and this barrell http://www.ebay.com/itm/111751837033. There are a couple other pieces i need like a 1" od piece of brass or aluminum for the end cap for the 4130 reciever(would brass or aluminum be better?) and a something to get the 3/8 od barrell to go in the 5/8 id 4130 tube reciver. So my questions are what is a good way to get the 3/8od barrell secure in the 5/8"id reciever. Would getting a piece of tube with a 3/8id and 5/8od bout 1/2" long welding that on the barrel then in the recever be a good idea(if so what steel should the piece be)? And lastly im kinda struggling with the math for the bolt weight. I read this article Orions Hammer and put my info in this expression ( bolt mass in pounds = 1.09x10-5 * bullet mass in grains * bullet velocity in fps * (diameter of bolt face / diameter of bullet base)^2) expression with my info 1.09x10-5 *40*1240* (.0625/.226)^2 and i got 0.04134769754 pounds for bolt weight is that right? It seems pretty light. Thanks

I figured out how I'm gonna do the barrel and the end cap(going with a aluminum end cap. Also I'm changed my mind and I'm going with a 7/8" od 1/16 wall 3/4" id 4130 tube for the receiver and a 7/8" 4140 rod bolt. But can someone check/verify my bolt weight math? (It's above in post)

I made an open bolt .22 pistol with Home Depot materials and my bolt weighed 4 ounces. It shoots .22lr but I chambered it for .22 shorts. I had no case ruptures with .22lr with a fully supported chamber.

well I know the bolt weight has to be about 4 ounces but I was hoping to find out the problem in my math. And why did you chamber it for 22 short if you were gonna shoot 22 longs? Thanks for the comment though.

I am not good with math to be honest, just wanted to give an anecdote. And I chambered it for shorts but wanted to see how well it would function with long rifle, I had to push them into the rifling. It was just for test purposes. I used a cz-75 11lb spring, which was very heavy surprisingly.

for my spring I'm planning on making a spring with some .045 music wire... do you think the .045 spring will be enough?

For my spring i'm gonna coil/make one out of some .045 music wire that i bought. Or do you think that .045 music wire is too thin for a spring?

Dpends, how tight you wind the coils will have an effect. If you have an ACE hardware nearby they carry music wire. I'd get some in -.05 and maybe .065 or whatever is close to that. It's cheap and you'll end up using it for something.

well I have some .0625 straight music wire that I got for the firing pin. The .0625 wire is not super clean and shinny like the .04 but I guess it dosnt matter lol

Yea the ace hardware music wire I use is dull grey, doesn't matter. I like to use premade springs whoever possible for simplicity sake.

I bought a marlin 60 barrel from numrich. It was like $50 shipped. I then chambered the barrel with a #1 drill bit. You may want to look into that route.

You may as well add a breech in front of the bolt and make a cut out to lock it and unlock it. Only one more part.
