Can anyone improve this 22 pistol plan?

I have a pdf plan here for a very rudimentary 22 caliber pistol. It would be something people might use in a zombie apocalypse. I was wondering if the gun wiz's here could give me some advice on how to improve it.

Specifically the part that calls for a nail to be used as a firing pin. This seems very dangerous. The nail could shoot back at the user. Is there a better way to secure the nail firing pin, so that in the event a bullet malfunctions the nail won't shoot back?

Also, the trigger is laughably crude. Any ideas on how to improve that?

Welcome to Weaponeer.  Got any Legos?

Thank you for the link.

I have deleted your duplicate post; your posts will be hidden for a bit after you post until they are approved by a moderator.  At a certain point, you will be able to post on your own.  We do this to keep spam down.

That's a very basic zip gun manual, written by a non-English teacher who is not a lawyer.

If you're going to use an unrifled bbl for a homemade firearm in the US, please do one of three things - make it at least 26" long, and if you put a shoulder stock on it, make the bbl at least 18" long; or pay the US Treasury $200 and wait for your Form 1 to come back with a stamp before assembling.

Two simple improvements - make a safety block behind the firing pin & hammer to restrain the firing pin should it come loose, and make the thing out of Legos.

Welcome to weaponeer .

Those end of the world type instruction manuals assume the judges, lawyers, police and gov't no longer care what you do. Please learn your local laws.

WROL
Without rule of law

This is a bare bones pistol/rifle combo you could get operational in less than an hour with scraps laying around the house.

I wonder how it would fare at the next buy back?

Replace the rubber band with a spring. Weld or pin the nail. You're using a piece of black pipe. This isn't a 300 yard rifle.

They might give you $50 for it @ the next gun buyback, but if you were to get stopped on the way, a pistol w/o rifling could get up to 10 years in prison.  Hence my 26" OAL advice.  If you manage to rifle the bbl later, then just saw off 18" of wood.

Go to the Brownells web page and order a .22 rifled barrel liner and epoxy it into the barrel pipe and you are legal.

Thanks for the replies. I thought my post didn't go through, as an error page loaded.

I'll pass on the legos idea. I don't necessarily intend to make this, but wanted to know of some easy ways to improve it. I like the suggestion of a safety block and a spring to replace the rubber band. Using a .22 liner got me to thinking that a real .22 barrel could be bought, used or new. Then use a ratcheting pipe to thread the chamber end so that it would work with the solid pipe plug.

How would you pin the nail? I'd prefer ways to improve the gun that don't require welding or expensive machinery.

Have  you seen the Professor Parabellum plans for the shot gun? He cross pins the firing pin in that.
