Dear forumites,

I've done some search about slide rails made out of brass but nothing came up.

So I wonder I anyone has already done it. There are brass profiles on the market which lend themselves due to their measurements to make guide rails out of it without much fuss.

If I see it there is no or little stress on the guide rails for a pistol slide. So I might give it a try and solder ready made brass strips on.

What is your opinion on this?

Thanks!

Not much stress, but lots of wear, due to the slide rather violently sliding back and forth on those rails.

I'll grant some pistols use plastic rails in places, so it may work.  You'll want to have some way to retain the slide in case your solder work suddenly fails, unless you like slide tartare.

Maybe bearing bronze. Harder but not so shiny.

I wouldn't trust it.
My 1911 wasn't heat treated and now I have some slop after about 500 rounds. I had hand lapped it too. That was steel.

Sorry, for replying so late but I was in hospital.

I guess it is possible, I'm talking here about the DIY sheet metal pistol like the .25 ACP Krikit pistol that's not a pistol you shoot several hundreds of rounds through.

I find the brass so attractive to use because it is sold in the right dimensions so I don't have to bother to cut a straight edge in some sheet metal or file a weld to dimension.

Thanks!

Hope the oil change went smoothly and everything's running on all cylinders again.

I would not go with brass either, even for light duty.

Polished and hardened steel all the way (you can do that at home easily).

If you want to get fancy or high tech,  Electroless Nickel the rails for much less friction
