Hmm, the AA bolt handle setup still has a charging handle on the back. I've always thought the AR would be better off with a side bolt than a rear charging handle.

They retain the use of the rear charging handle mostly due to the carrier key, and it still works left or right.

Having the bolt handle on the bolt removes the need to have the forward assist (a good thing)

Nice!  Is the AA available to the public yet?

I did not see it at their web site.

It's pretty cool, but that's just a bit too much over what I can justify for monetary cool factor.

I wonder how much of a pain it would be to cut out a chunk of a regular upper and thread a hole in the carrier.

edit: after taking a look at the side of my upper, I realize that would be pretty well impossible and it wouldn't look good if you managed it.

2nd edit: if I had the guts and the willingness to potentially destroy my spare upper I would totally cut it up and try this. With enough finish work after removing the deflector and the forward assist you may actually make this look pretty good.

Keep in mind AA receiver comes with:

  1. Billet upper receiver
  2. match carrier
  3. RHS charging handle

CMT Bolt Carriers (MILSPEC) Cost $120

LMT Bolt Carriers (MILSPEC) Cost $130

JP Full Mass Stainless Tactical Carrier (the one I have) Cost $190 and it's just the carrier. it takes another $65 to complete it.

Les Baer National Match Bolt Carrier and Key $185 and it's just the carrier. it takes another $65 to complete it.

Normal good quality Upper Receivers Cost $100

High Quality Upper Receivers such as the VLTOR MUR $230

What does all this mean?

a box stock MISPEC upper and Complete bolt will cost you $230 (approx)

A match grade AR complete bolt will cost you $250 (you still need an upper)

Fit a match grade bolt into a Stock upper $350.00

Install a match grade bolt into a VLTOR MUR $480.00

The Alexander Arms Billet upper receiver with match carrier and RHS charging handle for $325.15 is a steal at under $400 (assuming the bolt is not included).

Note: There has been a lot of upper receivers hitting the market which are low quality (they didn't pass MILSPEC inspection, so they are being sold at retail prices).  with the rush to provide Gov contracts a lot of corners are being cut and crappy parts are being made and getting kicked back by the Gov. These parts are now what are being sold to us in most cases.

I can see it being worth the dough if I didn't already have all the parts I need in an upper at RRA's christmas dealer special pricing. Being a dealer kinda puts the hurt on your mentality when it comes to buying things that you don't deal in. I didn't really mean to say that their stuff isn't worth what they are asking. It's also the dillema of already having parts and buying more stuff to do the same job just because it's cooler.

I just ordered the AA version and they have it in stock; I really like the top notch quality Bill Alexander produces there.  Bot now of course I have to order the barrel and other goodies to go along with it!

A friend of mine just had me shoot duracoat on his AA matched set. The quality was excellent. The tolerances were tight, and the fit and finish are excellent for the price that AA is charging.
