Tim B gave me a call at work today and told me I needed to get the latest issue of Shotgun News.
They have an article called building the SGN-9. The build uses a combination of parts from the Soumi, AR15 parts steel tubing and common steel stock to make a 9mm carbine.

I have not read the whole article yet, but he goes into annealing the Soumi bolt so it is easier to machine. He even cuts the hammer slot without using a mill.
This should be a very interesting build.

I don't have a subscription either, and the Twin Cities are SO LIBERAL ANTI-GUN that even most BOOKSTORES don't stock any firearms related magazines! In the past I used to have to go downtown to Shinders to find a copy of it next to the door into their Porno mag room... Most stores will stock the gay magazine 'Lavendar' which I once saw a guy flipping through - it had some picture of a guy in 'little boy' shorts bending over in one of the ads. AHH MY EYES!
But God forbid anyone stock a GUN magazine! Guns are apparently only for Murderers & Thieves!!! So says a few of the girls I've gone out with in the past "You have a GUN!?!? How many people have you killed!?!?" - I guess I never got that memo...
ETA: On a more POSITIVE note, I got a message from a local friend of mine, Andy:

Hey everybody, good to meetcha, I've been lurking for a while now...keeping an eye on the Suomi area.
The SGN-9 article looks really cool. I just grabbed a kit from Copes. I've been waiting for something for a build just like this for a long time. Can't wait till the next article.

So...anyone else considering this build? The article is well written and fairly thorough. So far, its pretty much the step by step instruction that I've been hoping for.
The only issue I can see so far is whether anealing the bolt is advisable. But I'm sure I / We can work through that one way or the other.
Anyone...anyone?

Not sure about annealing issues or not. I'm not going to be doing that build, but i'll be doing one similar, but using a different base kit for scrapping parts...
That's the fun part about homebuilds. They're SO FUN, and they're a different challenge than merely assembling an AR-15.

As for the addiction...I think I've got it bad. I started with an AR. After researching parts and assembly for months, I finally got all the parts and sat down to my "project". About 15 minutes later it was done. "Is that it?" I thought. It left me cold. Moved on to an AK, and that was much more satisfying. It got my feet wet with a little filing, drilling, headspacing and compliance issues. But I'm ready to move on with something more challenging. I'm sure glad I found this place

The SGN-9 article started me posting on bolt work. I showed that article to the metallurgists at work and they were stunned! Annealing a bolt with a torch, "until it is dull red" and then putting the rifle next to your head and pulling the trigger? One engineer at work is going to write to the editor. I will be updating my bolt heat treating work. I tried to anneal more bolts at 700F and they were too hard. I tried 800, 900 and Monday I will try 1000F. The hardness goal is 45Rc. 45Rc is an excellent compromise between wear resistence, machinability and toughness.

Do you know of a place where I could order some steel rod (for machining a bolt) that comes in a good 4xxx steel at 45Rc???
I agree, too soft of a metal for a bolt isn't wise. And metal too hard is useless to me...

I respect your opinions, particularly in such matters as safety. I'm just a noob here, but I've already learned a great deal from reading your and other postings.
However, I would like to suggest that we defer any judgements on this until the rest of the articles are published. This was only the first of multiple articles on this build. We have not yet seen whether or not recommendations will be made for heat treating in articles to come. He may end up recommending that bolts be sent somewhere for heat treat or testing. He also does state clearly at the outset that the builder is responsible for his own research, safety and legality.
I appreciate all and any efforts towards safety and good info. However; I would also hate to see such articles discouraged from being published. After all, he is just trying to share his build with us through the magazine.
No disrespect intended. I just thought it might be a good idea to see the rest of the articles before making a judgement.
