Ok, here's my project:

I want to build a gun resembling a Bushmaster/Gwinn arm gun, but I want to update it.

My Idea is to use a standard AR15 lower receiver and as many off-the-shelf parts as possible, and hopefully figure a way to make it reliable [a major downfall for the originals].  Also, if I can make it work with an unmodified AR lower, then technically I am making a conversion kit and not a gun.

Whatever I make, the first thing I need to do is model it, and figure out if my idea is workable.  The resin casting threads have intrigued me, and I think I might start out using resin to mould some of the parts until I get the design worked out.

First thing, I have a basic pencil sketch.  From there I suppose I need to put it into computer format so I can eventually make templates.  Any suggestions on [preferrably free] software?

Design notes:

  • complete AR lower, including trigger group, possibly an AR bench block as the attachment point [using the mag catch as a takedown lever]
  • Ar barrel, rotated 180 degrees, gas port down, Gas piston setup [similar to the Olympic OA series rifles]
  • Ar Bolt & carrier +/- mods required to get ^ to work
  • Rotating feature of original deleted
  • Piston parts/ oprod goes through buffer tube mounting hole.

I guess you cannot edit your posts..

  • If the unmodified AR receiver does not work, hack off magwell and maybe the buffertube ring, but retain the AR FCG as possible.
  • Convert AR bolt to some type of striker-fired mechanisim so as to retain the good AR trigger pull.
