My Feb 20 issue of SGN arrived today, and an article on economy scopes made mention of a couple of project guns: the SGN-22 and SGN-9. These apparently predate my subscription, and a Google search didn't turn up any obvious hits.
Can someone tell me where I can find construction info on the SGN-22?

I was also looking for the ppsh41 part one. I believe that it mentioned December 20th or so.

Guys-
For what it's woth, I found this thread while trying to find out more about the SGN 9 build and the PPSh 41 build because I'm not a subscriber and only just read about them today in the current issue. I sent SGN an e-mail inquiry and they just sent me a reply. The SGN 9 build appears in the Apr. 20, 2008; May 20, 2008; Jun. 20, 2008; and Jul. 20, 2008 issues.
The PPSh 41 build series apperars in the Dec. 20, 2008 and Jan. 20, 2009 issues.
The Feb. 20, 2009 issue article mentions that the SGN 22 build will begin being published with the Mar. 20, 2009, issue.
Back issues can be obtained by calling (800)260-6397.
Hope this helps.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I do think its funny that SGN has become a clearing house for "build" information. While I didn't get the SGN22 issue, I have one for the 1919, SNG9 and a few of the other guns.
As gun parts and guns themselves become more controlled, it will be interesting to see what SGN becomes.
I also realize that alot of people don't like the SGN builds... to complicated... and there was the question of the heat treat on a bolt for one of their projects.
However, any SGN that has a gun build or good gunsmith article, I tend to save them for future info.
Thanks for posting the phone numbers and SGN issue info!

I've taken a close look at the teaser pictures of the SGN-22 that Matthew's released, and in the optics article he mentioned that it was a "single shot, self-ejecting .22".
Now that really got me wondering. I see an extractor on the side of the bolt, and a big magazine below the receiver. Is this a bottom ejecting brass catcher? Now that'd be slick, especially since ejecting brass onto another shooters bench is impolite. Does it fire from an open bolt? It's s single shot, so it could, but I doubt Matthew's would design anything that could even be remotely considered "readily convertible."
Bottom ejection also permits LH or RH feed for shooters that prefer, or require it. No reason this can't be a tack driver. Can't wait to see what he does with it...and how we redesign the basic plan.

I question a lot of the stuff Reid Coffield does in SGN. It's obvious he's doing some of this stuff for no other reason than to meet a byline and get a paycheck. The only practical purpose to many of the builds in his articles is to satisfy the needs of some guys who just have to tinker. His series on sporterizing the Russian Mosin-Nagant is a case in point. The MN's forward bolt placement is awkward to operate quickly and smoothly from the shoulder, making it less than ideal for most hunters and really not worthy of the trouble and expense to sporterize. They're great fun for informal plinking but not worth the time and effort he put into that project.
His latest attempt to rebarrel a 1903 Springfield drill rifle into a usable .22 Long Rifle is another case in point. Who is going to drop $250 on a welded up 1903 and then go to all of the work and trouble make a new bolt, turn down another .22 barrel to use as a sleeve inside the old welded up and now drilled out Springfield barrel, etc., just to have a working .22? Why not just find an old .22 you like such as an old Remington Rolling Block Stevens Favorite, or Remington Model 12, etc. with a really bad bore (you can get good rifles with bad bores for next to nothing in price, depending on how bad the bore is), drill it out, acraglas a Redman barrel liner in place, cut a new chamber, and refinish the stock. This can all be done quicker and for far less money than Coffield will have in his Springfield when he's done screwing around with it.

Hi - my first post after a couple days of reading.
I am considering building the SGN-22 and have become confused about which SGN issues have the articles I need. I have the April 6th issue which I believe has the first article in the series - was there anything before that article other than mentions of future projects?
Next, the article I have says that the next in the series would be in the April 20 issue. My normal magazine source jumped from April 13th to April 27th. Was there an April 20th issue and is the second installment in that issue?
Finally, if the second installment was in the April 20th issue, when is the next installment going to appear?
If I need the 4/20 issue I will order it, but want to make sure I don't miss the next one as well.
Thank you - I'm looking forward to learning and trying some builds. This won't be my first build (have done some AKs and ARs) but definitely the first from a bunch of metal and a few odds and ends. Should be fun.

I really missed the boat on this one as my subscription to SGN expired a while back. I wish they would print the articles and sell them.

Welcome WardofThe State,
I just received my 4/20 issue in the mail yesterday 4/22. I guess they shipped them out of order. It does have the next installment of the SGN-22 build. I usually get them in the mail shortly before they appear on the newstand. So, look for it soon.

Thanks for the welcome and the reply.
I will start watching the magazine section more carefully. Nothing like a little confusion to liven up the party.

I made it to the book store and got part two of this build. This part covered the bolt construction. Did not read the whole article yet but I liked what I saw.

You can get both projects on CD from Intermedia.com.
you might have to search for SGN-22, it wasn't in the list last time I looked.
